Learning by Doing

I don’t learn by doing.

Not long ago learning by doing seemed to be a buzzword. It was EVERYWHERE. Everyone seemed to claim they learned by doing.

But, as I have grown used to, I tend not to be like everyone.

“Doing” uses a lot of my areas of NVLD challenge. Motor memory, fine motor skills, visual memory and processing, sounds like a bad day to me. Sometimes, there can also be spatial processing added in as well. Basically “learning by doing” would require me to learn by way of all my areas of disability. And no one really learns by processing things through all of their weakest areas of ability.

Considering my NVLD brain it’s no surprise I learn through written and spoken instruction. Spoken first, then using writing process documents seems to work best for me.

Many, many people across neurotypes/ diagnoses do learn by doing. Many dyslexic people, for example, have skills and strengths in the areas I have weaknesses. They might get lost and bogged down by learning through written or spoken instruction. Learning by doing is a valid and successful workplace accommodation for many neurodivergent people.

But not for all of us.

A truly neurodivergent affirming work place or world will be flexible to allow space for the learn by doing-ers and the written and verbal instructions folks. Many people can favor one or the other, but adapt to both. Many of us neurodivergent people cannot adapt to both. We need to be able to learn through our talents and skills.

As neurodivergent people we diverge from the norm. Each neurotype/diagnoses includes different strengths and weaknesses.
